A Consultant’s Take on Resilience – And Why It Matters More Than Ever
Real-life strategies to stay calm, focused, and effective – especially when things don't go as planned
Hi there,
A few years ago, we did a skills assessment at my previous consulting firm. One of the categories was resilience. To my surprise—and slight pride—it was one of the areas where I was rated at the highest level.
That got me thinking: What does resilience actually look like in consulting? And why is it one of the most underrated consulting skills?
Let’s break it down.
What Is Resilience in Consulting?
Resilience isn’t about ignoring stress or pretending everything’s fine.
It’s about staying functional—even effective—when things don’t go as planned. And in consulting, they rarely do.
It’s recovering quickly from client curveballs. Adapting to ambiguity. Keeping your energy up when everything feels just a bit off.
Why It Matters (Especially in Consulting)
Consultants constantly navigate shifting priorities, new clients, unclear requirements, tight deadlines, and internal politics. Even the best-laid plans rarely survive contact with the realities of a live project.
That’s when resilience truly kicks in:
When you’ve prepared for days and the client cancels at the last minute.
When your team’s scope shifts mid-sprint—again.
When you’re deep into a complex architecture and realize it won’t land with the stakeholders.
When your client unexpectedly ends your contract.
When your employer is going through layoffs and uncertainty fills the air.
In those moments, resilience isn’t a nice-to-have—it’s essential. It’s the quality that helps you keep moving forward without falling apart.
How to Build Resilience (Consultant Edition)
You don’t have to be born with it. Resilience is a skill—one you can strengthen over time. Here are the habits and mindsets that have helped me the most:
1. Pause Before You React
When something unexpected hits—project delays, angry emails, last-minute requests—don’t jump into panic mode. Pause. Breathe. Then respond with intention.
Ask yourself: “What’s the most constructive thing I can do next?”
2. Reframe the Setback
A failed workshop, tough feedback, or even a dropped ball doesn’t define you. It’s data. Use it.
Instead of: “This was a disaster.”
Try: “This didn’t land—why not, and how do I adjust?”
3. Know What You Can (and Can’t) Control
Not everything is yours to fix. Focus your energy where you can make a difference—and learn to let go of the rest.
💡 Pro tip: This applies to the bigger picture too. Don’t let the news or other things outside your control drain your focus.
4. Document Everything
Boring? Maybe. But when things go sideways—and they sometimes do—clear documentation protects your time, your sanity, and your credibility.
Think: meeting notes, decisions, assumptions, risks. Future-you will be grateful.
5. Lean on Your Network
Resilient consultants don’t go it alone. Talk things through with a peer, mentor, or even your manager.
Venting + perspective = clarity and calm.
6. Take Small, Purposeful Action
Motion beats rumination. Even a tiny step forward creates momentum and shifts your mindset.
Examples: Draft an outline. Write one paragraph. Sketch a diagram. Clarify one decision.
7. Protect Your Energy
Resilience requires fuel. Sleep, movement, boundaries, and breaks are not luxuries—they’re strategy.
💡 Pro tip: A short walk between Teams calls counts. So does saying “no” when your plate is full.
8. Remember: You’ve Done This Before
Confidence feeds resilience. Think back to a time when things felt overwhelming—and how you figured it out anyway.
Remind yourself: You’ve solved harder problems. You’ve been here before. You’ve got this.
Final Thoughts
Resilience isn’t about being unshakeable. It’s about bouncing back—and forward.
In consulting, it means staying grounded when things get uncertain. Helping others stay focused when they’re frustrated. And continuing to deliver even when conditions aren’t ideal.
You don’t need to master it overnight. Just start noticing your patterns. Pause. Adjust. Keep showing up.
That’s the job—and the superpower.
