Consulting Tip #07 On Year-End Reviews and Setting Clear Goals 📊
Hi there,
Continuing with the New Year’s theme, let’s talk about another thing that can set you up for success in 2025: a structured year-end review and goal-setting process.
Many people set New Year’s resolutions, but too often, they remain vague aspirations rather than concrete, actionable plans. Instead of just hoping for progress, a year-end review helps you assess your progress, recognize achievements, and set clear objectives—giving you a solid foundation for the year ahead.
💼 Consulting Tip #07: Do a Year-End Review and Set Clear Goals
🔍 Why Do a Year-End Review?
A year-end review isn’t just about listing accomplishments—it’s about understanding what led to success, identifying areas for growth, and ensuring that your efforts align with your bigger goals.
By reflecting on the past year, you can:
✅ Recognize what worked—so you can double down on effective strategies.
✅ Identify areas for improvement—so you can refine your approach.
✅ See patterns—what energized you, what drained you, and what truly made an impact.
✅ Ensure alignment—so you’re not just busy but actually making meaningful progress.
✅ Help career progress—by ensuring your accomplishments are reflected in performance reviews.
For consultants, this could mean evaluating projects, skills development, client relationships, and business impact. If you're also engaged in writing, public speaking, or personal development, those should be included too. You may even want to include personal goals related to fitness, health, hobbies, or relationships—since professional and personal growth often go hand in hand.
A good year-end review isn’t just for yourself—it can also be shared with others. Publicly summarizing your achievements and goals creates positive pressure to follow through and helps you connect with like-minded people.
📝 How to Structure Your Year-End Review
1️ Review Your Key Metrics
Numbers provide a clear, objective view of your progress. Consider tracking:
✔️ How many clients/projects did you work with?
✔️ How satisfied were your clients?
✔️ How many deals, proposals, or sales cases did you contribute to? What was their total value?
✔️ How many events, presentations, or articles did you participate in or produce?
✔️ Any notable milestones in career development, such as promotions, certifications, or new skills gained?
Tracking these over time provides valuable insights into your career trajectory.
2️ Reflect on Qualitative Wins & Challenges
Beyond numbers, what really made an impact?
✔️ What were your biggest wins this year?
✔️ What did you learn from challenges or failures?
✔️ What unexpected opportunities shaped your year?
✔️ Which activities gave you the most energy—and which drained you?
A common pitfall is to focus only on what went wrong. But it’s just as important to identify what worked well so you can build on it. Success leaves clues—make sure you follow them.
3️ Set Clear Goals for the New Year
Now, take what you’ve learned and turn it into an action plan for 2025. Good goals are:
🎯 Specific—Avoid vague statements like “become a better consultant.” Instead, try:
“Speak at two industry events,”
“Complete an advanced certification,”
“Work in more long-term projects.”
🎯 Measurable—Make sure you can track progress. For example, set a goal for:
“X sold projects amounting to Y dollars,”
“X published articles,”
“Y books read.”
🎯 Aligned with Your Long-Term Aspirations—Every goal should serve a bigger purpose in your career or personal development.
Setting professional goals is obvious, but don’t forget about personal growth as well. You might include learning a new skill, improving work-life balance, or taking on a new creative challenge.
📌 Pro Tip: Align with Your Official Work Goals
Most companies have annual performance reviews and structured goal-setting frameworks, like OKRs or KPIs. However, how useful these goals actually are varies from company to company. Some firms integrate them well into career development, while in others, they can feel like a bureaucratic checkbox exercise.
Regardless, review your official goals alongside your personal objectives to see how they align. This way, you’re not just checking boxes but actively shaping your career in a way that benefits both you and your employer.
4️ Share Your Goals for Accountability
One of the best ways to stay committed is to share your review and goals—with colleagues, a mentor, or even publicly. This creates:
✔️ Positive pressure—You’re more likely to follow through when others know your goals.
✔️ Opportunities—People may offer insights, advice, or even collaborations that help you achieve your goals.
✔️ A stronger network—Your peers may be working on similar objectives, and you can support each other.
For example, I shared my 2024 year-in-review and 2025 goals on LinkedIn. It was a great way to reflect on achievements, challenges, and new directions—plus, it helps keep me accountable.
🚀 2025 Goals – Make This Year Count!
