Weirdest Places I Have Worked From as a Consultant
Continuing on a lighter note this week—let’s talk about the weirdest places we’ve found ourselves working from as consultants.
For me, I usually need an external mouse and preferably an external monitor to get serious work done. I spend a lot of time working on architecture diagrams and complex documentation, so I can’t get by just emailing or having meetings on my phone. There’s also confidentiality to consider. This makes my “work from anywhere” options a bit more restricted.
Also, I barely travel at all for work. Most of my clients are based here in the Helsinki metropolitan area, and much of the work is done remotely. Yet, I’ve still found myself working in some rather unusual locations.
Sure, there’s the occasional listening in to a meeting from a bus or working on a document on a train. I’ve worked multiple times from various cabins in the middle of nowhere. I’ve also found myself working from one client’s office while taking a meeting with another client. Of course, this was done with full transparency and mutual understanding. Remote work certainly creates some interesting scenarios!
But the strangest place by far?
➡️ A small flying club’s cottage at a tiny airfield, waiting for an airworthiness inspector to check on the club sailplanes.
This was back before remote work was fashionable, and yes, I was using my phone for internet access.
But honestly?
➡️ I prefer working from my home office. Nothing beats the comfort of my own ergonomic setup, reliable equipment, proper desk, the selection of coffee and tea, and most importantly—the peace and quiet to focus and get things done.
I’m sure I’m not alone in this. Consulting often takes you to unexpected places—both literally and figuratively.

I’d love to hear your stories, no matter how bizarre or unconventional!
